We just got back from a little getaway to the mountains and boy were we overdue! The last vacation we took was probably over a year ago which is far too long. We had plans to go to Asheville for our anniversary back in March and thanks to COVID shutting down everything, we cancelled our trip.
Of course, we wanted to go to Asheville but knew this trip would look a little different. Usually we try to stay closer to the Biltmore/Downtown area because that is usually where we go when there and with the dogs in tow, makes going back for meals/potty breaks easy. However, this time we knew we wouldn’t be doing our usual because of social distancing, that the proximity wasn’t as important to us. We figured we would probably spend more time in the cabin vs out and about.
Brookside Cabin
We landed on Laurel Mountain Retreat – Brookside Cabin located in Weaverville which is about 15 – 20 minutes outside of Asheville. It was the perfect location. The cabin was far out enough to feel like we were “out in nature” but not really far from civilization. Sergio and I have learned that we are not true out in nature kinda folks. Ask us about our Hot Springs trip that til this day we still experience PTSD whenever we see rivers.
This cabin even had a little gated area meant for dogs which seemed perfect, except for the fact that Gracie and Addie were easily able to get through the bars. Womp, womp.
Probably my only complaint about this rental was the bed situation. It was a full size bed and NOT comfortable. The first two nights, I slept in the bed and woke up with all kinds of aches and pains. I switched over to the couch the last two nights and had a much better sleep. While I loved everything else about the cabin, not being able to sleep comfortably is a deal breaker.
Sergio and I would love to one day retire to Asheville. I actually would love to get a second place there now and use it as a rental with Air BnB or VRBO for income. Then when we do retire, we can make it our permanent place. Not sure how thrilled Sergio is about that idea but you never know. Weaverville is definitely somewhere we could see ourselves moving too!
